Introduction

Modern German Grammar Workbook is an innovative workbook designed to be used with modern approaches to teaching and learning German as a foreign language. The book addresses  learners’ practical needs by combining structural exercises with tasks that practise communication skills. Section 1 provides exercises based on essential grammatical structures. Section 2  practises individual functions and small groups of functions such as making introductions, expressing needs, describing people, etc. Many of the exercises are based on settings explained at the  beginning of this part.Section 3 allows you to take on realistic roles in short scenes, set in a range of different contexts. The emphasis here is on finding appropriate ways to express the various  roles.Sections 2 and 3 are designed so as to make it easy to work through situations as and when you need them.
The book is intended for all those who have a basic knowledge of German, including undergraduates taking German as a major or minor part of their studies, as well as intermediate and advanced  students in schools and adult education. Ideally it should be used alongside Routledge’s Modern German Grammar. The exercises in Sections 1,2 and 3 are cross-referenced to the  relevant sections of the Grammar with an arrow sign. The references introducing each scene in Section 3 correspond to entries in the index of Modern German Grammar. These help you to find  how to express yourself in a way appropriate to the particular scene. However, if you do not have a copy of the Modern German Grammar, you can complete the exercises using a good dictionary  and a standard reference grammar.
